2B40.2 Cartesian Diver

[Setup Time: 5 Min.] [Current Condition: Good]

Info

A small diver (a cylinder closed on the top and filled with water and air) floats at the top of a large water-filled tube. Pressing on the rubber top of the tube increases the pressure throughout, forcing more water into the diver, changing its buoyant force and causing it to sink.

Parts List

Eye Dropper in Cylinder in B. Fluids & Mech, 1B

Rubber Stopper with Turkey Baster in B. Fluids & Mech, 1B

Note: If the diver (eye dropper) has sunk it must be removed and refilled with the appropriate amount of air. Squeeze the baster while holding the stopper down.
